Kidney Cancer Staging

Kidney Cancer Staging will determine the kidney cancer treatment. Once the T,N, M categories have been identified, they will be combined and based on the result, define the staging of the kidney cancer. The lower the kidney cancer staging category, the better the prognosis.

Stage 1: The tumor is 7 cm or smaller. It is confined to the kidney only with no spread to lymph nodes or distant organs

Stage 2: The tumor is larger than 7cm. It is still limited to the kidney with no spread to lymph nodes or distant organs

Stage 3: The main tumor has reached the adrenal gland, the renal vein and/or the vena cava, but it has not spread beyond the Gerota’s fascia. There is no evidence of spread to more than one nearby lymph node and no spread to any nearby node and/or distant organs.

Stage 4: This stage spans over a wider spectrum of possibilities. The main tumor has spread beyond the Gerota’s fascia. It has spread to one or more nearby lymph nodes. It may or may not have spread to distant organs. The tumor has spread outside the kidney.
