It is highly resistant to fire, extremely durable and popular for its insulation qualities; asbestos was once praised as blessing by the construction industry. But it was about in the mid 1980, when the medical community issued alarming warnings of progressively increasing numbers of patients being diagnosed with asbestos induced diseases. It was proven, that being exposed to asbestos, either at the working place or in the living environment, bears a high risk of developing mesothelioma, asbestosis or certain forms of lung cancers.
And still today there are many homes in which asbestos was used while they were constructed. Especially, if they were built before 1970. Therefore, more and more homeowners consider having asbestos testing done or hire one of the asbestos removal companies to get rid of the toxic material in or on their house. A reputable asbestos company would typically carefully inspect your living environment, and then provide you with an estimate on the costs to safely remove any hazardous materials. But many homeowners like to take matters in their own hands and rather carry out the job alone without hiring anybody.
However, this is a risky endeavor. Don't get me wrong, I am a homeowner myself and believe me, unless it is something I really can't do, I rather do it myself than spending ridiculous amounts of money having somebody coming in. But asbestos removal is a different story. Removing asbestos often means that you have to use force to break or chip off bits and pieces. And that may damage the material and this exactly can be very dangerous, since you might breathe in the toxic fibers that can cause mesothelioma. You also got to think about your family's safety. Having kids playing in the backyard while you throw around asbestos shingles might not be a good idea.
Asbestos removal contractors have the gear and the experience to safely remove everything from your home. Further to that, they have the infrastructure and the machinery for an environmentally responsible asbestos disposal. Because that’s another good point; even if you were able to remove everything from your house, how would you get rid of it?
And with regard to the costs; it is certainly less expensive to hire an asbestos removal company than paying for treatments for mesothelioma, asbestosis or lung cancer. I have kidney cancer and my wife has breast cancer. And both of us will be more than happy to show you our medical bills to prove what I just said.
