Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Mesothelioma Treatment Options

August 10, 2010
Even though that according to modern medicine, this malignant disease is not curable yet, there are several mesothelioma treatment options available. Below are the most commonly used treatment options for mesothelioma.

Asbestos can cause the development of mesothelioma and a number of other severe diseases. Especially individuals who have a history of occupational asbestos exposure are at a high risk of getting sick. It is not unusual though, that it may take up to several decades before a patient exhibits the first symptoms of an asbestos induced disease. This has a significant impact on the available treatment options – all cancers have one thing in common: the later they are being detected, the more difficult is their treatment.

Surgery: Via a surgical procedure, the health care professionals can attempt to remove the primary tumor and surrounding tissue. It is not unusual that, dependent on the stage of the cancer, that the doctors may decide to remove parts or even entire organs. For instance, it is possible that a lung needs to be removed. Here is a list of the procedures a surgeon may perform in order to treat mesothelioma:

  • Pleurodesis
  • Pneumonectomy
  • Pleurectomy/decortication
  • Pleurectomy
  • Peritonectomy
  • Extrapleural pneumonectomy

Radiation Therapy: Radiation is part of the standard treatment protocol for mesothelioma. Through highly concentrated x-rays, the tumor site is being targeted to kill cancer cells. Radiation techniques have come a long way as they are much more targeted to the actual cancer site. However, there is still a risk of damaging healthy tissue. Furthermore, if the tumor is located close to an organ, like the heart, the administration of radiation therapy can pose further complications.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapeutic drugs are agents that are being intravenously administered into the bloodstream of the mesothelioma patient. However, none of the currently available chemo therapies can cure the disease. Nonetheless, if the cancer is not too far advanced, chemo can be an effective method to slow down the progression of the disease.

Immunotherapy: This treatment approach is based on the concept of boosting the body's immune system and support it in its fight against the cancer cells. Some mesothelioma victims have shown remarkable results with this method. Frequently, patients who try this option also follow the principle of living a healthy lifestyle and eating high quality foods.

Patients, if they qualify, may also consider signing up for clinical trials through which new mesothelioma treatment options are being tested.

Asbestos Companies And Their Ethical Responsibility
