Asbestos is known for being very inexpensive and also for its outstanding durability. It was not until the mid 80s when the downfall of asbestos materials began. Up until then asbestos was a major component in manufactured asbestos floor tiles.

The popular asbestos floor tile was actually made of two things; vinyl and as mentioned asbestos fibers. The asbestos tile was known for being extremely resistant to fire or any outside influence for that matter. But still the material itself was very flexible which accounts to a large part for its popularity among manufactures and construction companies.

Nowadays, this is certainly hard to believe. With the increasing number of newly diagnosed mesothelioma and asbestosis victims every year, people became more aware of the risks and potential hazard that comes with any asbestos laden material. According to statements from experts, asbestos tiles which are not damaged do not pose a significant risk.

However, if you have broken tiles or even just scratched ones lying on your floor, that would of course change the situation. Should you thinking about removing your asbestos tile flooring yourself, you may want to reconsider. This is a very delicate task and in second, I will explain why. Not only the asbestos tiles need to be removed, but also the glue that connects to the floor. This is not an easy task. The use of power tools is strongly not recommended.

Unfortunately, a lot of homeowners are either in a rush or want to save money and therefore disregard this advice. However, this is where it can get very dangerous. As the asbestos tiles break or crack, the material gets set free and finds its way into the air. Sometimes, just putting another layer of flooring that doesn't containing any toxic materials is being put on top of the asbestos tiles. However, a lot of homeowners don't want to take any risk and hire an asbestos tile removal company. And for a whole host of reasons - mainly related to one's health -I do think this is a very good idea.

Only an asbestos removal company has the necessary gear and experience to carry out the job safely. It is expensive, there's no about it. But the question is: how much is your and your family’s health worth? I guess it's a no brainer, right? For my part, I wouldn't do it, even if I had the adequate protective gear. There not too many things in and around my house I typically "outsource".

But I do know my limits. And removing an asbestos tile floor does not fall into that into the area of things I would feel comfortable doing.
