There are several forms of mesothelioma known to us. One is the so called abdominal mesothelioma which is also referred to as peritoneal mesothelioma. This is a cancer that starts do develop in the tissues of the peritoneal cavity in the abdomen.

It usually affects males from the ages of 50 to 70. However, 20% of all abdominal mesothelioma diagnoses are made for women. The symptoms of this cancer include, but are not limited to: loss of appetite that consequently results in weight loss, abdominal swelling and pains in the abdomen. If any of those symptoms are shown in a patient, he or she is typically being scheduled for further examinations, such as X-rays and CT and PET scans. If the results indicate that the patient may have abdominal mesothelioma, the next step is to perform a biopsy. Via this surgical procedure, a health care professional takes a sample of the affected area to be tested on malignancy and other parameters in a specialized lab.

After a diagnosis has been made and if it's confirmed that the patient indeed suffers from abdominal cancer, the necessary treatment will be determined by both, the health care professional - typically an Oncologist - and the patient.

The treatment protocol is based on a variety of factors, such as the age of the patient, the size and grade of the tumor, its location, and the overall condition of the patient. Abdominal mesothelioma has a rather poor prognosis. This unfortunate reality is also due to the fact that mesothelioma is usually detected at a rather late stage. That means, the cancer has already progressed and often spread out further affecting other organs or parts of the body. In cases like that, the whole treatment plan is designed to enhancing the patient's quality of life. Usually, portions of the primary tumor are being removed in order to relieve pressure in the abdomen.

Cancer treatments, especially for mesothelioma peritoneum, are expensive. I know that, because my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in spring of 2009, and I followed her only seven months later with the diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma, the cancer of the kidney. Our bills go through the roof, that’s just the fact of the matter.

However, any form of mesothelioma can be usually directly linked to exposure to asbestos. Therefore, victims of abdominal mesothelioma have a good chance of seeking monetary compensations for the damage done to their health, by filing for an asbestos mesothelioma lawsuit.
